Use keyword rank tracking when you need to know where a page appears in search results. Use AI visibility tracking when you need to know whether an answer mentions your business, recommends it or links to your website. If you need both, ask for both reports. A single score called “AI rank” won't tell you which job the software actually does.
That distinction matters before you buy. An agency reporting on a client's Google rankings needs a different record from a founder checking whether an assistant includes their product in a shortlist. Here's a brief you can take into a demo, with a scorecard for each question.
What are you trying to find out?
The wording on a product page can cover more than one kind of measurement. Rank Math's AI rank tracking guide, for example, includes broad SEO platforms and dedicated AI visibility products. Treat the category name as a starting point; inspect the report behind it.
| Your question | Record to ask for | What it doesn't establish |
|---|---|---|
| Where does this page rank for a keyword? | The query, ranking URL, organic position, search engine, location, device and check date. | Whether an AI answer recommends your business. |
| Does this AI answer include my business? | The exact question, named answer surface, full answer, mentions, recommendations, cited URLs and check date. | Your page's organic search position or the number of customers who saw the answer. |
There can be overlap in the software. Ahrefs Rank Tracker describes keyword monitoring by location and device, alongside SERP features including AI Overviews. Ahrefs Brand Radar focuses on brand visibility in AI search. Those are separate reporting jobs even when one vendor offers both.
A combined subscription can make sense if your team uses both reports. Keyword.com's comparison makes the case for bringing them into one platform. Check that convenience against your brief: can the package show the keyword result and the saved AI answer separately, with the market and date attached to each? A shared dashboard is useful only if you can still explain its numbers.
Write a brief before choosing a tool
Finish this sentence: “We need to measure this outcome for these questions or keywords in this market, so this person can make this decision.” Name the outcome before listing vendors.
For an SEO campaign, that might mean tracking the landing page for “emergency plumber Melbourne” on mobile in a specified location, so the agency can assess its search work. For an AI visibility campaign, it might mean checking which plumbers an answer recommends for an after-hours callout in Melbourne, so the owner can see which businesses and supporting pages appear. These are illustrative examples, not measured results.
Bring the brief into the demo. Ask the vendor to show the evidence for that exact job, explain the collection method and identify any settings it cannot observe. A country-level check shouldn't be presented as a suburb-level result. An API answer and a consumer interface should be identified separately.
- If you want keyword rankings: confirm the locations, devices, search engines and ranking URLs you can track.
- If you want AI visibility: confirm the individual answer surfaces, custom questions, answer history and access to source links.
- If you want both: request two sample reports and ask which subscription or module supplies each one. Check what consumes the allowance.
Use our AI rank tracking tool comparison to build a shortlist after you've written the brief. It's easier to compare a few products against a clear requirement than to buy the broadest feature list.
Keep two scorecards
You can review the scorecards together, but retain their definitions. A change in one doesn't automatically explain a change in the other.
| Field | Keyword rank scorecard | AI visibility scorecard |
|---|---|---|
| What was checked? | A fixed list of keywords, with location and device settings. | A fixed list of buyer questions, with each engine and market recorded. |
| What appeared? | The ranking URL and its reported organic position. | The business names, actual recommendations and cited pages in the saved answers. |
| What is the result? | Positions and movement for the same keywords. | Answers mentioning or citing the business, out of completed answers checked; show each engine separately. |
| What was missing? | Uncollected checks and missing rankings, distinguished where the tool allows. | Failed checks and checks with no AI answer, kept separate from answered questions that omit the business. |
| What happened commercially? | Search visits and relevant conversions in separate analytics. | Identifiable referrals and relevant conversions in separate analytics. |
If an AI answer gives your business the third place in a list, describe that placement within that saved answer. Don't translate it into “Google position three.” An answer may use paragraphs rather than a numbered list, and a source link may support a definition without recommending the source's business.
Likewise, count answers and links separately. One answer citing your site three times is one citing answer. Read the linked passage before deciding what the citation means. Our fair AI visibility testing guide explains how to keep questions and collection settings consistent over repeated checks.
An AI Overview feature isn't proof of a recommendation
A keyword report can tell you that an AI Overview was present. Depending on the product, it may also track whether a page appeared in that feature. Ask which of those it records and whether you can inspect the answer and supporting link. A presence icon alone doesn't explain what the answer said about your business.
Google's guidance on AI features says AI Overviews and AI Mode can use different models and techniques, so their responses and links can vary. Google also reports traffic from these features within Search Console's overall Web reporting. A rise in that total alone doesn't separate an AI Mode referral from other Google search traffic.
The same guidance says ordinary SEO fundamentals apply, with no special schema or AI text file required. Publishing a new page doesn't guarantee inclusion. Check that the page is accessible and useful, then inspect the answers over time rather than promising a rank from one release.
Choose the report you'll actually use
For a keyword campaign, insist on the keyword and ranking URL behind the position. For an AI visibility campaign, insist on the question, answer and cited page behind the score. If a demo can't show those records, ask how you'll investigate a change after you become a customer.
Reputably's AI visibility tracking is for inspecting AI answers and their sources. It doesn't replace conventional keyword position tracking. Start with the report your next decision needs, and keep the other measurement alongside it when it has a clear purpose.
This guide uses linked vendor documentation and illustrative examples. It isn't a hands-on accuracy comparison of the products. For a practical next step, bring your written brief to the AI visibility setup guide and choose the buyer questions your team will review.
