Best AI rank tracking tools: choose the right kind of visibility
You may need to know where your website ranks in Google, whether AI recommends your business, or both. Start with that decision, then compare the tools.
· Reputably Editorial
Which AI rank tracking tools belong on your shortlist?
Compare Semrush, Ahrefs and SE Ranking when your team needs traditional search rankings alongside AI visibility. Compare Reputably, Profound and Otterly.AI when the central task is understanding mentions and citations in AI answers. Reputably is particularly relevant to local businesses and agencies that also need social listening and review workflows.
These are six options for different jobs, not an accuracy league table. We publish Reputably and include it here. This guide is based on linked vendor documentation reviewed on 28 September 2026, with Reputably capabilities checked against product source and our connected tracker. We have not conducted a controlled, hands-on comparison of the six products. Recommendations about fit are editorial judgments. Read our editorial policy.

“AI rank tracking” can describe two different purchases
A conventional rank tracker follows a page’s position for a keyword, usually with a specified search engine, market and device. An AI answer tracker follows generated responses: whether a business is named, how it is described, and which pages are cited. An AI feature that helps analyse keyword rankings does not automatically mean the tool collects ChatGPT answers.
Consider a plumbing company. “Where is our emergency plumbing page in Google?” requires keyword-position data. “Which plumbers does an AI assistant recommend in our service area?” requires repeated answers to that buying question. “Which website did the answer cite?” requires source evidence. Each is useful; each needs its own measurement.
| Your question | Required evidence | Do not substitute |
|---|---|---|
| Where does our page rank? | Keyword, search engine, location, device, date and observed position. | An AI-generated SEO recommendation. |
| Does the answer recommend us? | The full answer and a consistent recommendation definition. | A source URL with your domain in it. |
| Which page is cited? | The cited URL and the answer containing it. | A domain-wide visibility score. |
| Did this bring a customer? | Website visits and verified enquiry or registration events. | A citation or crawler visit. |
Compare the tools by the work your team needs to do
Semrush: evaluate the combined SEO and AI tracking workflow
Semrush’s rank tracking documentation describes keyword and LLM prompt modes, competitor comparisons, location and device controls, and reporting. That makes it a relevant option when a team already works inside a broad SEO suite.
The practical buying question is whether the package covers the specific AI questions and search markets you need. Ask the vendor to demonstrate a keyword result and an AI answer separately, then show where each appears in your report. Confirm included allowances rather than assuming every feature on the website belongs to one subscription.
Ahrefs: separate Rank Tracker, the AI index and custom prompts
Ahrefs Rank Tracker serves keyword-position monitoring. Brand Radar separately describes an AI visibility index and custom prompts. The index supports broad discovery; custom prompts track the questions you configure.
For an established SEO team, that distinction can make the product easier to evaluate. Ask whether a reported result came from the broad index or your own prompt set. If your business is small or the buying question is very specific, demonstrate that exact question instead of assuming a large index contains it. Check the cadence and check allowance for the selected engines.
SE Ranking: inspect answer evidence alongside the SEO toolkit
SE Ranking’s AI Visibility Tracker describes brand mentions and links, competitor comparisons, historical answers, and source analysis across URLs and domains. Its current public page lists ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews.
It is a sensible candidate for a team evaluating AI tracking within a wider SEO workflow. During a demo, ask to open an answer behind a visibility change and the page behind a citation. Confirm supported markets, languages and the module in the quote; product-wide coverage and a particular plan’s entitlement are separate questions.
Reputably: AI visibility alongside leads and reputation
Reputably tracks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overview. It connects answers with competitors and cited sources. Each parent question can have three additional phrasings, so a complete group gives you four ways to test the same buying intent.
This is useful for a business owner who wants to understand both “Do assistants recommend us?” and “Where are people asking for our service?” Agencies can use separate client workspaces and turn a result into a concrete discussion about the client’s website or reputation. Lead monitoring and review management address those adjacent jobs.
Inspect the actual generated wordings: four slots are not necessarily four distinct questions. The source trail also depends on the engine. Reputably shows disclosed searches where the provider supplies them; it cannot reconstruct a hidden retrieval path. A citation is evidence that a page was used, not proof that the answer endorsed the business.
Reputably is not a conventional Google keyword-position tracker. Perplexity and Copilot are outside its five tracked answer surfaces. If those are central to your brief, compare another option. If you need AI answer visibility alongside leads and reputation, use the setup guide and confirm current plan capacity.
Profound: organise an answer-engine research programme
Profound’s Answer Engine Insights documentation describes prompts organised into topics and tags, with visibility, citations, sentiment and share of voice. That provides a useful evaluation starting point for teams managing a larger set of research questions.
Bring a real reporting requirement to the demo. Ask how someone can move from a topic-level change to the answers and sources behind it, and how the team would share that evidence. Verify engine access, markets and permissions in the proposed plan. A well-organised dashboard still needs a useful prompt set and an owner who acts on the findings.
Otterly.AI: focus on recurring answer and citation monitoring
Otterly.AI’s feature page describes prompt monitoring, brand analysis and cited-link reporting. It belongs on the shortlist when recurring AI search monitoring is the main purchase and the team already has its other marketing workflows.
Ask to inspect a full answer, its cited links and the history of a tracked prompt. Then confirm which engines are included and which require additional coverage. Compare the exact workload you intend to run, including countries and frequency, instead of choosing from a starting price alone.
A useful trial should leave you with an answer you can inspect
- Choose a real buyer question. Use an unbranded question, such as “Which accounting firms work with small retailers in our city?” Keep questions that name your brand in a separate group.
- Record the conditions. Save the exact wording, engine, collection method, configured market and time. Record unknown settings as unknown.
- Open both positive and negative results. Does the positive answer recommend the intended business, merely mention it, or only cite a page? Can you see a completed answer where it is absent?
- Check source counting. If one answer links the same domain three times, it is still one answer citing that domain. Inspect the page as well as the domain.
- Check missing results. A failed collection and a completed search with no AI Overview are different states. The report should show coverage and explain the denominator.
- Repeat before concluding. Reuse the same question set and conditions. Keep newly added questions in a separate cohort so easier prompts cannot quietly improve the headline score.
Our fair AI visibility test explains the record to keep. For client delivery, use the agency reporting template. These methods apply whichever vendor you choose.
Compare the monthly workload before comparing prices
A “prompt” may mean a parent question, one exact wording or a check on one engine. Those units create very different bills. A hypothetical programme with ten parent questions, four wordings per question, five engines and thirty daily runs contains 6,000 planned answer checks. That is arithmetic, not a Reputably allowance or a quote from any vendor.
Send the same brief to each vendor: questions, distinct wordings, engines, markets, cadence, history, workspaces and exports. Ask how failed checks, retries, extra engines and additional clients affect the bill. Use our AI rank tracking cost worksheet to write the brief.
Turn the report into one useful change
If assistants repeatedly cite a comparison guide while your site only has a product page, inspect the comparison task that guide answers. You may need clearer trade-offs, better product evidence, or a specific explanation for your audience. A cited competitor page is a research lead, not an instruction to copy it.
Google’s AI features guidance says established SEO practices remain relevant and no special AI markup is required. Publish helpful visible content, make it accessible, and connect related pages with useful links. Check citations and recommendations over time; measure enquiries and registrations separately. No tracker can guarantee an AI recommendation or a deadline for earning one.
Sources and verification
Official documentation is linked beside each product description. Capabilities and packaging can change; confirm the specific plan before purchasing. The guide does not publish private tracking exports, customer records or an unverified cross-vendor performance score.
AI rank tracking questions
What is the best AI rank tracking tool?
The best fit depends on the job. Compare Semrush, Ahrefs and SE Ranking for an SEO suite with AI tracking. Compare Reputably, Profound and Otterly.AI for answer visibility workflows. Reputably also combines lead monitoring and review management. Verify the engines, evidence and plan capacity you need.
Can a traditional rank tracker tell me whether ChatGPT recommends my business?
Only if it also provides the relevant AI answer tracking. Keyword positions and AI recommendations are different measurements. Ask to see the complete ChatGPT answer and the exact collection method.
Is a citation the same as a recommendation?
No. An answer can cite your guide while recommending another product. Count citing answers, brand mentions and verified recommendations separately.
How quickly will a new guide rank in AI answers?
There is no reliable guaranteed deadline. Keep a fixed question panel, verify that the page is live and accessible, and review results over repeated runs. A published page, a crawl and a citation are separate events.
