What will AI rank tracking cost for the work you need?
A starting price only helps once you know what it buys. Write down the checks, client accounts and evidence your team needs, then ask vendors to quote the same job.

Start by agreeing what a prompt means
Compare AI rank tracking costs using a written workload, not the number beside “prompts” on a pricing card. One vendor may count every wording separately. Another may group variations under one question. Engine selection, countries, frequency and reporting can change what is included.
There is also a category decision. Traditional keyword-position tracking, a broad AI visibility research index and recurring checks of your own questions do different work. Our AI rank tracking tools comparison explains which shortlist to use.
A worked example: ten questions can mean 6,000 checks
The following is an illustrative planning example. It is not a customer result, vendor quote or statement of Reputably’s plan allowance.
| Input | Example | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Parent buying questions | 10 | Keep each question tied to a decision you can act on. |
| Distinct wordings per question | 4 | The original plus three variations creates 40 wordings if all are unique. |
| Answer engines | 5 | Forty wordings across five engines creates 200 checks per run. |
| Markets | 1 | An additional market would double this example’s workload. |
| Runs during the month | 30 | Thirty runs produce 6,000 planned checks before retries. |
10 questions × 4 wordings × 5 engines × 1 market × 30 runs = 6,000 planned checks. Twice-weekly collection with eight runs would instead plan 1,600 checks under the same assumptions. That does not establish the price: vendors may bundle usage, weight engines differently or sell fixed subscriptions.
Actual completed coverage can be lower when a check fails, no answer is returned or a surface such as AI Overview is absent. Ask for planned, successful, absent and failed counts alongside the bill. Do not interpret a lower number of collected answers as a lower number of billable checks without confirmation.
Use this worksheet for every quote
| Requirement | Your answer | Vendor confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Buying questions and variations | ___ parents; ___ distinct wordings | What counts as one prompt? |
| Engines and surfaces | List each one: ___ | Which are included, optional or unavailable? |
| Market and language | ___ markets; ___ languages | Which settings are supported and separately charged? |
| Frequency | ___ runs per month | Fixed schedule, selectable cadence or on demand? |
| Businesses and workspaces | ___ clients; ___ team members | Workspace, seat, role and access limits? |
| Evidence and history | ___ months; required fields: ___ | Full answers, exact URLs, methods and export access? |
| Failure handling | Required coverage report: ___ | Are retries or failed checks billed? |
| Commercial terms | Currency: ___; billing term: ___ | Tax, add-ons, overage, renewal and cancellation terms? |
The worksheet can reveal that two quotes are not competing for the same work. For example, one may cover your existing SEO keyword list while another covers five custom AI buying questions. Request a corrected quote before declaring one cheaper.
Questions to ask about specific tools
Ahrefs Brand Radar distinguishes a research index from custom prompts, with different ways to buy coverage. Ask which product and check allowance the quote includes. Index size is not the number of your own questions being checked daily.
Semrush describes keyword and prompt tracking modes. Ask which mode, AI features and reporting access your proposed package supplies. Write engine and market requirements into the brief so a broad platform description cannot be mistaken for plan-level inclusion.
Reputably can add three phrasings to a parent question and offers five answer surfaces. Confirm current per-business prompt and workspace capacity against the plan. The 6,000-check example above is a planning illustration, not a promise that one Reputably business can hold ten parent questions. Check the actual generated wording and completed coverage.
Reputably publishes this worksheet. Product examples explain differences to inspect; they are not a measured ranking of value for money. We reviewed the linked public documentation on 28 September 2026 and avoid publishing a price table that could imply equivalent workloads.
Budget time to use the evidence
A subscription is only part of the work. Someone needs to read surprising answers, check whether the correct business was identified, inspect useful citations and decide what to change. Agencies also need time to explain the findings to clients.
Estimate that work with your own team. If a person reviews fifteen answers for two minutes each, that is thirty minutes before any content edit or client discussion. This is an illustrative time budget, not a benchmark for every team. A larger prompt panel that nobody reads can cost more while producing fewer useful decisions.
Start with the questions closest to a buying decision. Keep your regular panel fixed and add exploratory questions separately. If two wordings are identical, flag the duplicate before treating them as distinct coverage. The fair testing protocol provides a method for repeatable checks.
Decide what would make the purchase worthwhile
Agree on a practical acceptance task: can your team open the answer behind a score, distinguish a recommendation from a citation, and identify one useful action? Then decide whether the tool makes that task easier enough to justify the cost.
After subscribing, report AI mentions and citations separately from visits, enquiries and registrations. A tool can help you measure visibility; a higher visibility score does not by itself prove a sale. Use the agency reporting template to keep evidence, actions and business outcomes connected without conflating them.

Common cost questions
Does one prompt mean one AI answer?
Not necessarily. A parent question can expand into multiple wordings, and each wording can be checked across engines, markets and dates. Ask the vendor what the prompt and check allowances count.
Can I compare plans by their starting price?
Only after matching the workload and required features. Confirm engine inclusion, prompt definitions, cadence, markets, workspaces, history, exports and any add-ons.
